I saw this on Shocklines today, which serves as a reminder:  for as much poo that’s been flung at that message board from all corners, and for all the rightful criticism of some of the drama that takes place there, there are still useful things to be found.  In this instance, it’s Ellen Datlow posting a link to a “State of the Genre”  summation for 1989. Those essays routinely appears at the beginning of her Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror anthologies.    You know, if one wanted a quick history of the last 20 years of Genre fiction, those books, and summations, are an apt place to start.
